The Death That Forced Baseball’s Hand
Ray Chapman remains the only player to die from an on-field injury in Major League Baseball history. On August 16, 1920, the Cleveland Indians shortstop was struck in the head by a pitch from New York Yankees submarine-armed hurler Carl Mays. Chapman died the next morning. Chapman’s death led directly to the banning of the spitball and stricter rules about keeping clean baseballs in play. What it did not immediately produce was head protection. That’s the part modern fans find hard to believe — baseball spent decades treating beanballs as an occupational hazard rather than a solvable equipment problem.
Early Baseball Helmet Experiments Were Slow and Reluctant
The first real attempts at head protection came in the 1940s. Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey, working with a former US Army colonel, helped develop a plastic-lined cap insert in 1941. MLB Finally Mandates the Baseball Helmet
Major League Baseball didn’t require batting helmets league-wide until 1971, and even then it grandfathered in veteran players who preferred the old flapless style. Why the Earflap Mattered So Much
The plain helmet without an earflap protected the crown of the skull but left the temple exposed on the side facing the pitcher — precisely where a fastball is most likely to make contact on an inside pitch. The earflap closed that gap and remains the single most important structural addition to helmet design since the 1971 mandate.
The Tragedy That Pushed Coaches Into Helmets Too
Batters weren’t the only people MLB eventually had to protect. On July 22, 2007, Tulsa Drillers first base coach Mike Coolbaugh was killed by a line drive while standing in the coach’s box during a Double-A game.
